Installing a PEMBREE GCS stem takes about 10 minutes with the right tools. All clamping bolts should be tightened to 9 Nm, and the detail that cyclists most often forget is to leave a slight assembly gap at the bottom of the handlebar clamps: the top must close completely, the bottom must maintain a visible gap.
Before starting, check:
- That your fork steerer tube is indeed 1 1/8" (28.6 mm) in diameter. GCS stems are not compatible with other diameters.
- That the diameter of your handlebar matches that of your stem: 31.8 mm or 35 mm depending on the model.
- That the steerer tube is cut cleanly and leaves 2 to 3 mm of clearance below the top of the stem (or the last spacer) once installed. This clearance is essential for proper tightening of the headset.
- That the clamping surfaces (steerer tube and handlebar) are clean and dry. Do not grease these surfaces.
Required tools: 5 mm Allen key, torque wrench (recommended), Motorex Anti-Seize or equivalent for bolt threads.
Installation steps:
- Remove all bolts and front clamps. Apply a little grease on the threads and under the bolt heads.
- Slide the stem onto the steerer tube, with the centerline of the stem body facing upward. Install the top cap and preload bolt, then tighten gradually until the headset play is eliminated while maintaining smooth rotation. Do not overtighten.
- Reinstall the two steerer clamp bolts, tightening them lightly, align the stem with the front wheel, then tighten the two bolts evenly to 9 Nm by alternating.
- Position the handlebar centered in the stem (use the PEMBREE GCS handlebar centerline if installed). Install the front clamps using only the upper bolts — the X marking identifies the correct side of each clamp. Tighten the two upper bolts evenly to 9 Nm by alternating.
- Install the two lower bolts and tighten them to 9 Nm by alternating. Check that the handlebar is aligned, the headset rotates freely without play, and that the stem-clamp interface shows no gap at the top and a visible assembly gap at the bottom.
After installation and during the product's lifetime: regularly check bolt torque, re-grease the threads during maintenance, and inspect the stem for cracks, deformation, or corrosion. Replace immediately if damaged, and always re-inspect after a fall or significant impact.
Bolt replacement: use only bolts provided or bolts approved by PEMBREE. Do not replace them with lower-grade fasteners, and ensure full thread engagement.
If in doubt about any step, consult a qualified bike mechanic before riding. Incorrect installation of cockpit components can result in loss of control.
